Portugal’s Algarve – More Than Just Sun, Sea & Sand

It may be known for its beautiful Blue Flag beaches and an incredible 300 days of sunshine per year, but there’s so much more to Portugal’s Algarve region than sun and sand. The southern coastline is a real haven for those of you who need to de-stress and unwind on holiday, whether that means hitting the greens with your golf clubs or discovering a natural spa in the countryside. Get ready to indulge in some serious me-time.

It’s got to be Golf

You’ll notice that many of the visitors to the area have a passion for golf and, when you see just how many courses there are to try out, you’ll understand why they make a beeline for the Algarve. The Masters takes place here every October (11th-14th for this year) and it’s held at the Oceanico Victoria course in Vilamoura. In 2011 we saw Britain’s own Tom Lewis crowned the victor, so there’s no better place to soak up the atmosphere. If your budget doesn’t stretch to premium fees then choose one of the 38 other locations to enjoy a bit of tee time, with most offering junior rates for young enthusiasts as well as lessons for any age group to brush up on their skills. The newest course, Espiche, is even eco-friendly.

A Bottle or Two

One of the most overlooked things to do on a holiday to the Algarve is to try its wines. Ask anyone you know about the famous wine regions of Portugal and, chances are, they won’t even consider the lowly south! However, you’re missing out if you don’t sample some of the excellent produce here, which is helped by the warm and dry climate and the sea breezes. Cliff Richard has his own vineyard near Guia, called Adega do Cantor, which translates as ‘the winery of the singer’ and produces signature two wines: Vida Nova and Vida Onda. You can take a guided tour of the vineyard and learn how viticulture works, as well as sampling the produce.

Hop on a Boat Tour

As the Algarve enjoys a beautiful coastline dotted with beaches, islands and sea caves, it would practically be a crime not to explore the region by boat. You may well spot dolphins on your travels, through an organised dolphin-watching tour with a marine biologist (run from several of the local harbours) which is designed to appreciate the animals but also let them enjoy their natural habitat. Alternatively you can enjoy reef fishing along the coastline from Albufeira, or visit the large array of sea caves around the dramatic Ponta da Piedade rock formations. For something really sedate then try a river cruise from Alvor village that visits sheltered spots like Silves, home to a stunning medieval castle.

Make time for a Spa Visit

You can either try out a day spa (there are many across the region) or go for the natural approach with a trip to the Caldas de Monchique, which are hot springs where the waters are said to have healing benefits. You can see the springs and buy bottled water to get a true taste of wellbeing. Wherever you choose to go, make sure you disconnect from all distractions and really let yourself unwind.

One of the easiest ways to enjoy this experience is to do so at your hotel, as many of them have dedicated facilities for guests to be pampered. The Agua Hotels Riverside Resort and Spa is just one example, boasting a wide range of options at the Agua Viva Spa including a massage for children, body wraps and a marine facial treatment. Once you’re relaxed, head out to the gardens that overlook the Arade River close to Portimao, or walk along to the village of Ferragudo and enjoy the tranquillity as you watch the sunset.

Step Back in Time

The Algarve has a rich history which is easy to explore, regardless of time constraints, as you’re never far away from an old fort (the coastline is littered with these ancient defences from marauding pirates) or a building decorated with beautiful blue illustrative tiles called azulejos, which have been a signature sight in the region for centuries. There are also plenty of affordable – or even free – museums where you can become absorbed in local culture, from the Portimao Museum that’s housed in an old sardine packing warehouse to the Costume Museum of Sao Bras de Alportel.

At the Vila Gale Albacora Hotel in Tavira you’ll even find a heritage museum inside the grounds, as the resort has been built in a former tuna fishing village where workers lived. Period details such as the chapel have been left intact and are fascinating to explore. There’s a frequent ferryboat crossing to the main areas of Tavira should you wish to explore the historical city and its Roman bridge.

Evidently you can enjoy the best of the Algarve without cramming it into a hectic schedule; there are plenty of sights to see at your leisure, allowing you to recharge your batteries on holiday.

Art Deco in Amsterdam

Amsterdam’s artisan design movement today could be seen as an extension of its Art Deco past. Once home to Dutch Art Deco movement’s forerunner – Jan Torooper, his influence can be seen everywhere. Torooper was born and part-raised in former Dutch colony of Indonesia.

His influence, and Indonesian past can be found in minute detail in anything from furniture and architecture still easily seen today, as well as clothing, jewellery and art found in vintage stores on the Nine Streets and in flea and antiques markets too. One of the most famous Art-Deco tourist attractions within the city is the Theatre Tuschinski, designed and built in the 1800s by Berlage – one of the city’s most famous Art Deco architects.

Art Deco as I live and bathe

A Sauna Deco

Two distinct styles are at work between the Sauna Deco and the grandiose Amrath Hotel (see below). The Deco sauna is kitted out with swirling, organic forms in a fanciful French art-deco style. Thanks to the former owner of the sauna, the majority of the lobby area’s breath-taking fixtures were rescued from the scrap heap when a Parisian department store decided to remodel, including a remarkable cast-iron staircase. Spot the difference: some pieces are from the Dutch school of art-deco however, including the tiles around the pool, salvaged from the city’s bank (another of Berlage’s designs).

Zuiderbad’s pool

Perfect for a Sunday morning swim, the Zuiderbad first opened its doors as an indoor cycle track over 100-years ago. The Zuiderbad first became a pool just a few years into its life, during the roaring twenties. Though there isn’t too much roaring going on there these days, it’s one of the most tranquil spots to enjoy a swim if you can’t make it to a spa. Mounted fountains and original art-deco mosaics covering the walls give the impression of a Roman spa. In keeping with the Roman feel, every Sunday the Zuiderbad is open to nude swimmers for an hour (imagine arriving at the end of that hour?).

The Theatre Tuschinski

Almost psychedelic, the interior and exterior features of the Tuschinski are suggestive of dream-visions or early sci-fi artwork, incorporating both Art-noveau and Art-Deco styles. The switches between organic and otherworldly aren’t at all subtle, but it is nonetheless a mesmerising building. The Tuschinski is by far one the best examples of the Dutch Art-noveau and Art-Deco styles, and happens to also be a fantastic place to catch a movie or see live music. Designed and built by Polish Jew Abraham Tuschinski, the structure survived the German occupation (though Tuschinski did not) by changing the name above the frontage.

Sleep in Art Deco

Eden American Hotel

Designed by Hendrik Berlage, who also designed the Amsterdam stock exchange building, the impressive exterior of Eden American along with its 1920s extension is a national heritage building. Setting back from the street, the grand façade and fountain create a magical setting for a dinner date – the classic-cool of the entrance lobby could be anywhere from Miami to Berlin. What really sets the building apart however is Café Americain, the hotel’s bar and restaurant, detailing both inside and out belies an artisan triumph in art nouveau and art-deco styles.

The Grand Amrath

Built in 1890 the Grand Amrath hotel stands as a slightly macabre monument to the nieuwe kunst (‘new art’) movement. Close to Centraal Station the Amrath’s dark brick creates a forboding fortress-like exterior, it’s monumental size conceals a number of the design features from the naked eye.

The Amrath’s interior is an entirely different story, warm tones and beautifully preserved original features are everywhere. In the hotel’s spa you’ll find colourful designs in the updated pool area. An astonishing skylight illuminating distinctive decorative features, creating a cathedral-like space in the hotel’s main stairwell.

Happy Fourth of July!

City Connect wishes all our American readers a very happy Fourth of July!

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.

Background

During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring the United States independent from Great Britain. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. A day earlier, John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:

“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

Adams’s prediction was off by two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress.

Historians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, even though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had signed it on that day. Most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed.

In a remarkable coincidence, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. Although not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, but another Founding Father who became a President, James Monroe, died on July 4, 1831, thus becoming the third president in a row who died on this memorable day. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872, and, so far, is the only President to have been born on Independence Day.

Customs

Independence Day is a national holiday marked by patriotic displays. Similar to other summer-themed events, Independence Day celebrations often take place outdoors. Independence Day is a federal holiday, so all non-essential federal institutions (like the postal service and federal courts) are closed on that day. Many politicians make it a point on this day to appear at a public event to praise the nation’s heritage, laws, history, society, and people.

Families often celebrate Independence Day by hosting or attending a picnic or barbecue and take advantage of the day off and, in some years, long weekend to gather with relatives. Decorations (e.g., streamers, balloons, and clothing) are generally colored red, white, and blue, the colors of the American flag. Parades are often in the morning, while fireworks displays occur in the evening at such places as parks, fairgrounds, or town squares.

The night before the Fourth was once the focal point of celebrations, marked by raucous gatherings often incorporating bonfires as their centerpiece. In New England, towns competed to build towering pyramids, assembled from hogsheads and barrels and casks. They were lit at nightfall, to usher in the celebration. The highest were in Salem, Massachusetts (on Gallows Hill, the famous site of the execution of 13 women and 6 men for witchcraft in 1692 during the Salem witch trials, where the tradition of bonfires in celebration had persisted), composed of as many as forty tiers of barrels; these are the tallest bonfires ever recorded. The custom flourished in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and is still practiced in some New England towns.

Here is Beyoncé singing her patriotic power-ballad God Bless the USA at the Macy’s Fourth of July NYC celebrations in 2011. Proceeds from this charity single goes to families of 9/11 victims.

Independence Day fireworks are often accompanied by patriotic songs such as the national anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner”, “God Bless America”, “America the Beautiful”, “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”, “This Land Is Your Land”, “Stars and Stripes Forever”, and, regionally, “Yankee Doodle” in northeastern states and “Dixie” in southern states. Some of the lyrics recall images of the Revolutionary War or the War of 1812.

Firework shows are held in many states, and many fireworks are sold for personal use or as an alternative to a public show. Safety concerns have led some states to ban fireworks or limit the sizes and types allowed. Illicit traffic transfers many fireworks from less restrictive states.

A salute of one gun for each state in the United States, called a “salute to the union,” is fired on Independence Day at noon by any capable military base.

The famous Macy’s fireworks display in New York City has been televised nationwide on NBC since 1976. In 2009, the fireworks display was returned to the Hudson River for the first time since 2000 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s exploration of that river. It was the largest fireworks display in the country, with over 22 tons of pyrotechnics exploded. Other major displays are in Chicago on Lake Michigan; in San Diego over Mission Bay; in Boston on the Charles River; in St. Louis on the Mississippi River; in San Francisco over the San Francisco Bay; and on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.. During the annual Windsor-Detroit International Freedom Festival, Detroit, Michigan hosts one of the world’s largest fireworks displays, over the Detroit River, to celebrate Independence Day in conjunction with Windsor, Ontario’s celebration of Canada Day.

While the official observance always falls on July 4th, participation levels may vary according to which day of the week the 4th falls on. If the holiday falls in the middle of the week, some fireworks displays and celebrations may take place during the weekend for convenience, again, varying by region.

The first week of July is typically one of the busiest American travel periods of the year, as many people utilize the holiday for extended vacation trips.

Geo F Trumper: Shaving, Artisan Style

Since 1875, George F. Trumper serviced the shaving needs of British aristocracy, and now has found itself known as one of the most luxurious men’s barbery goods and perfumes. Trumper’s products have hit the mark when it comes to a soft, lathery finish for facial shaving—or any other part of the body that the user deems necessary—and a fine fragrance to boot. The products are quintessentially British, evidently through their charming vintage feel old school packaging and fragrances, which come in the likes of almond, coral, coconut, lime, rose, violet and sandalwood. 135 years of concocting and perfecting have done them wonders.

The idea behind shaving cream is that it is meant to keep the face moist and protected while the razor glides over the skin, soften the hair follicles and make for a smooth and all too easy, irritation-free shave. Trumper’s cream achieves this goal with typical British pomp and ceremony as the cream froths up into a rich and slippery lather with the smallest amount, giving way to a smooth and easy razor glide.

The Trumper Coconut Oil Shaving Cream is a testament to wet shaving for men (and women too) and retails for £8.70 for 75g and £15.50 for 200g.

After the shave, of course, comes a bit of post-shave facial love, which as beauticians say, is a necessary part of the shaving process. With daily razor use and regular facial friction, the skin of the cheeks and neck can suffer. That is why we suggest Geo. F. Trumper’s Skin Food.

Many men use up to a four-razor shaver every morning, which is dragged along their cheeks, neck, jaw—everywhere sensitive—that in addition to removing the tops of facial hair follicles, also removes the top layer of dead skin, revealing sensitive skin that hasn’t yet seen the light of day.

For most, this leaves a smarting sensation after shaving, which is easily addressed by a post-shave balm like the Skin Food, which looks after the traumatised skin and restores it back to comfort. It can also be used before shaving to soften the hair and the skin, but given you use it after the fact, too, it’s far too wasteful. Geo. F. Trumper’s Skin Food retails for £14.50 for 100ml, £20.50 for 200ml and £36.00 for 500ml.

For the aforementioned products and to see the whole Geo F Trumper range, check out their website at: http://www.trumpers.com/

Sunscreen Expert Launches Free iPhone App

Leading suncare expert, La Roche-Posay, has developed a free mobile iPhone app, My UV Alert, designed to promote sun safe behaviour and encourage the British public to act responsibly in the sun by advising users on the latest UV levels and weather forecast.

My UV Alert uses Met Office weather forecast data to give you the most accurate forecast available.

Available through the ‘iTunes App Store’ and compatible with the Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch,  My UV Alert highlights the potential damaging effects of UVA and UVB rays on the skin and provides users with personalised suncare advice.

The new pioneering app aims to help in the battle against Melanoma and raise awareness of the damaging effects of UVA and UVB rays to skin.

Here are some of the features available on My UV Alert:-

UV profile – answer a short set of questions to determine your skin type and discover your personal UV risk level.

Push alerts – receive location specific notifications on the UV level in your area, tailored to your skin type.  The alerts will advise when UV levels are high and remind you to apply and re-apply sun protection.

Sun protection tips and advice – practical tips and advice to keep skin protected from UV rays, and how to stay safe when spending time outdoors whilst in the UK.

Weather forecast – find out the latest weather forecast in your area.

UV level warning – find out the latest UV level warning in your area.

Share option – access links that allow you to pass the app and advice on to friends and family.

Store locator – to help find the five nearest stockists of leading suncare range, La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL

My UV Alert showcases further information about the La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL range, which offers the highest sun protection from both UVB and UVA rays. The range comes in a variety of formulas for different skin types and is suitable for even the most sensitive of skins. La Roche-Posay is one of the most recommended sunscreens by British dermatologists.

Jane Toner, Marketing Manager for La Roche-Posay states:
“Two thirds of the nation (62%) still does not apply the recommended amount of sun protection. We hope that the My UV Alert iPhone app will help to educate people that UVA and UVB rays can cause both ageing and skin cancer”.

My UV Alert will also highlight the importance of wearing a good quality, broad-spectrum sunscreen all year round, as even when it isn’t sunny or warm outside, UVA and UVB rays can still cause damage to the skin.

To download the My UV Alert iPhone app, search for “My UV Alert” on the iTunes App Store or click here.

Touche Éclat – New Shades for Every Complexion

City Connect brings you the latest news from the world of health & beauty. This month, we feature the UK’s number one luxury beauty product – TOUCHE ÉCLAT by Yves Saint Laurent. It has given the radiance of a star to complexions since its launch in 1992. This year, Yves Saint Laurent has added 3 new shades for darker complexions, making the miracle of TOUCHE ÉCLAT now attainable by even more women than ever before.

How many beauty products have truly stood out in the last 20 years? Changed women’s lives, become a timeless, top-reigning classic around the world, a light among lights?

Original, avant-garde, refined, TOUCHE ÉCLAT is one of them. When it was launched in 1992, this luxurious, skin-illuminating pen-brush revolutionized make-up. It was immediately a huge success, and everyone had to have it. The price of fame? You know it… no other product has been as copied, imitated, simulated. Who does it better than TOUCHE ÉCLAT? Try it, compare… the real magic is here.

Val Garland, Artistic Adviser for Yves Saint Laurent Make-up, says “TOUCHE ÉCLAT is the ultimate modern beauty tool. It’s a new make-up essential that chases away morning pallor, erases fatigue, and reveals inner radiance. It is ideal any time of day, on bare skin or over make-up”. Like many others, Val Garland is a fan of TOUCHE ÉCLAT. During the catwalk shows, she even uses this magic brush on its own to create make-up looks.

When applied beneath the eyes, TOUCHE ÉCLAT lightens dark circles. It can be used to lighten other drak zones such as those on the sides of the nose, at the corners of the mouth and over expression fine lines. TOUCHE ÉCLAT erases tiredness and catches the light to bring out skin’s natural radiance and give an instant blush of youth.

Apply it directly on the skin with the brush, before foundation or after. Tap lightly with the fingertips to blend, or put a bit on the back of your hand before applying it with fingertips where desired.

It has been the same from the very beginning; a winning formula of un-heard of texture that will not be changed. TOUCHE ÉCLAT will not be touched! Light, evanescent, with incredible finesse and ease of application, this magic chameleon fluid literally fuses with the skin, blending into moisturizing cream or make-up. Perfect for touch-ups throughout the day, even over foundation or powder, it does not get thick or leave a line.

AS FOR COLOUR, it’s impossible to go wrong. Seven shades are adapted to any complexion, from the palest to the darkest.

N° 1Luminous Radiance: the original highlighter for all complexions
N° 1.5Luminous Silk: for golden tones and oriental complexions
N° 2Luminous Ivory: for fair complexions with pink tones
N° 3Light Peach: for olive complexions
N° 5Luminous Honey: for light asian complexions
N° 6Luminous Amber: for darker asian complexions
N° 7Luminous Mocha: for afro-caribbean complexions

TOUCHE ÉCLAT can be used to highlight features by either being blended into the central zone of the face, the middle of the forehead or on the tip of the nose and chin It perfects skin texture and reveals the relief of the face with surprising results.

TOUCHE ÉCLAT definitely brightens your look. Melted into the eyelid, the arch of the eyebrows and/or the inside corner of the eye, it smoothes and unifies the epidermis. Used with eye shadows, it makes it more radiant and favours its hold.

A concealer? A corrector? TOUCHE ÉCLAT is much more than that. One could say it invented “anti-dull” cosmetics and launched a new generation of skin embellishers, emphasizing radiance over coverage. Closer to what women really need, more natural, it does not mask the skin but makes the complexion sublime.

Get instant results. You won’t see TOUCHE ÉCLAT on your skin, but you’ll see the light. Where does it come from? A unique complex called Luminocaptide, uniting cristalline and flaked micronized 9% concentrate pigments. Reflecting light in an optimal way, it “blurs” wrinkles and flaws, giving your face a luminous glow. Technical prowess that remains unequalled.

TOUCHE ÉCLAT also is able to plump lips. Redefining the contours of the lips with TOUCHE ÉCLAT makes the mouth more present, more glamorous, and more sensual.

TOUCHE ÉCLAT corrects mistakes like an eraser, allowing you to instantly rectify small smudges, smeared eyeshadow, runny lipstick. It conceals a discoloration, redness, and even a small blemish.

If women love TOUCHE ÉCLAT, it’s also for its softness and non-stop comfort. Thanks to its Humectine moisturizing and refreshing complex, it glides onto skin. The exclusive fibers of the bevelled brush caress and tease the epidermis. The privilege of great design houses…

TOUCHE ÉCLAT is a fantastic idea that is truly original. Click, press and the magic brush dispenses the perfect amount to brighten your face or make a small imperfection disappear. Chic, practical, beautiful, TOUCHE ÉCLAT goes everywhere you do without changing colour or showing wear and tear. Take it out and display it like you would a precious compact. It’s a gorgeous creation signed Yves Saint Laurent.

TOUCHE ÉCLAT has all the qualities of great artists who know how to last: elegance, intelligence, and simplicity. Like the gifted who work in silence, like stars who make a rare public appearance, TOUCHE ÉCLAT has kept silent for a long time. Today, it’s back in the spotlight with a new advertising visual in harmony with its image: pure, refined, timeless, discreet and sophisticated all at once.

Launched in 1992, TOUCHE ÉCLAT has never fallen from its pedestal. Still N°1 in sales at Yves Saint Laurent, it is sold somewhere in the world every ten seconds. And during the years, its list of fans has only gotten longer. Stars are loyal to it. Journalists rave about it before slipping it into their make-up case. Professional make-up artists rarely work without it, and there is not a television studio that does not have this golden pen as a staple. Even gentlemen whom we know to be demanding have adopted it, including certain very, very highly placed foreign politicians. But shhh, it’s a secret…

Get your pen of perfection now at Debenhams (£1 from the sale of this product will be donated to Breast Cancer Campaign) and other beauty counters nationwide – TOUCHE ÉCLAT costs only £24.50 – a small price to pay for something that will be the magic wand  in your make-up bag.
